Visit from Bristol Zoo

On Tuesday Bristol Zoo Outreach programme came into school. We were so excited, as 3 different types of creepy crawlies. First we were able to look and hold a Hissing Cockroach, then an Australian Stick Insect called Kylie and finally a baby scorpion. It was exciting to hold a Hissing cockroach, as they hiss when they feel threatened or in danger. We also learnt about different creatures in a food chain, which ones are predators and which ones are prey. There were many different things we learnt, it was really enjoyable.

Soundation

We tried making our own music using an on-line programme and thought you’d like to hear some. These are only our first attempts but we have big plans to create a tune to accompany our animations. Here are a few of them – more to come later.

Meeting ‘Shelby’

The classroom door was locked and tape covered the classroom door when we entered school today. When we went inside, we were faced with different clues around the classroom, each with numbered labels. Our task was to investigate the different clues and create a conclusion about which creature was in our classroom. We took notes and images and came up with many different conclusions; some thought it was a slug, a beetle or a termite – but it was actually an African Giant Land Snail. We held a ballot and decided her name would be Shelby. At the moment she is still a baby but she will grow and grow until she is bigger than our hands. We are feeding her cucumber, as she enjoys sucking the liquid from the middle and leaving the harder edges.

‘Oranges and Lemons’

We’ve just started our new topic ‘Games children play’ and have been exploring the rhyme of ‘Oranges and Lemons’. Different churches in London were named in the rhyme, which originated in 17th century, so we have decided to change it to include different landmarks in Bristol. At the moment we have drafted a few verses, full versions coming soon.
